Where Love and Action Interlace
Artist: Carolyn Heacock
Technique: Handwoven overshot on an 8-shaft loom
Materials: 8/2 and 10/2 unmercerized cotton, 3/2 mercerized cotton, mounted on black canvas with black shadow box frame (no glazing)
Where Love and Action Interlace draws on two traditional overshot patterns—Whig’s Rose and Lover’s Knot—whose symbolism resonates across time. Whig’s Rose carries associations with civic engagement and purposeful action, while Lover’s Knot embodies unity, affection, and the bonds that hold communities together. In bringing these motifs into conversation, the piece reflects on the idea that activism rooted in love becomes not only more resilient, but more humane.
The alternating red and white structures emphasize interdependence: each motif strengthens the other, and the clarity of the pattern emerges only through the relationship between contrasting threads. Mounted on a black canvas and framed in a clean shadow box, the weaving steps forward visually, much like the values it evokes—care, responsibility, and collective courage.
This work invites viewers to consider the patterns we inherit, the ones we choose to continue, and the perspectives that emerge when love and action are woven inseparably together.
