Dusk and Dawn Monarchs

Artist: Barb Byrne
These two monarchs were created using black glass enamel with glass powder. One butterfly is predominantly orange with marigold accents, while the other butterfly is shades of azure blue. The bodies are individually sculpted from an innovative clay-like glass product. The butterflies are displayed on standoffs in a black shadowbox frame. The standoffs allow the light to filter behind them in the frame. The frame is approximately 9" x 11" and the butterfly sculptures measure approximately 4" x 4.5" each. The frame has a kick-stand that will allow shelf or table display. It also has wire across the back to allow for wall hanging.

Artist: Laurie Colahan
"Flowing Vibrant Streams" is a captivating journey into the realm of abstract expression. Measuring 12x12 inches, this artwork masterfully blends acrylic, marker, and graphite to create a complex and lively visual experience. The composition bursts with dynamic colors, dominated by striking shades of teal, turquoise, and green. These cool tones are energetically interrupted by bold strokes of coral and peach, which bring a sense of warmth and balance to the piece. Subtle touches of brown and white are strategically placed to add depth and contrast.

Sycamore Leaf Natural

Sycamore Leaf Natural

Artist: Karen Merkel
Ceramic form with sycamore leaf imprint. I enjoy sharing my work that reflects the beauty of the earth made with clay from the earth. I am inspired by nature and use natural items such as leaves to create lasting artwork. Each leaf is used only once so each piece is unique. Sycamore Leaf Natural was created by pressing a sycamore leaf into a slab of speckled buff clay. After cutting around the leaf and shaping it, the leaf was removed and discarded. After being bisque fired, a glossy black glaze was applied and then sanded off to accentuate and reveal the veins in the leaf. Leaves have continually been a favorite subject for my work. I enjoy looking for leaves to use in my pottery to preserve the beauty of each leaf in a lasting form. The size is 10.5x10x1.25 inches. KM3236. IMG_2529.

Making Honey Triptych

Making Honey Triptych

Artist: Wanda Tyner
Glass Sculpture inspired by honeybees and their importance to our world. Artistic Process: For the backgrounds, I cut multiple hexagons and fired them together to create the desired thickness as well as color and depth. I then cut many hexagons in different shades of ambers. These were fired to the base larger hexagons to create the honeycomb design. Cutting hexagons is the geometry and math challenge - decide size, then cut the right width in rectangle shape, determine correct angle and cut one way, flip cut another way, which gets diamond shape then make it a hexagon. The bees are kilncasted and permanently adhered to the honeycomb. The stands are made of multiple layers of glass cut into a complementary shape to fit the overall design. I made amber glass "pebbles" and added them to the front and back of the stand to create drops of honey. The sculptures come together to form a larger honeycomb look for the hive.

Junk of the Heart #205- 2021

Junk of the Heart #205- 2021

Artist: Alicia Firstbrook-Stott
I have been teaching art for almost two decades, including the likes of Kindergarten through 12th grade and even at the college level. My students can attest that I do not let them waste anything. I am constantly spraying down paint with water to keep it usable, picking objects off the floor and keeping articles that others might find useless. It is also common to see me digging in the trash because “I...can use this for something.” Through this, I have been collecting discarded materials that I feel could be used within my art. My artwork is built one layer at a time. Although my theme is aimed at portraying the various emotions the heart can experience; when I begin a piece, I do not have an image of what the end result might be. I incorporate what I am feeling into the materials I have found on my scavenger encounters. I had always despised the symbol of the heart. To me, it represented something that everyone knows how to draw, and a sappy feeling of love…uggghhhh!!! I thought, “Real artists don’t use hearts, or any symbols for that matter.” The year 2007, I went through an incredibly tumultuous time in my life. The result, I literally “felt” the spectrum of emotions my heart endured. This phenomenon led me to redefine what I thought the “heart” represented. My series “Junk of the Heart” represents all the junk, or emotions, that can be endured and what we choose “do” with them. The product is a metaphor for how the "junk" of our hearts can be transformed and reinvented into art.
