Shuttlecocks
Artist: Karen Merkel
Ceramic shuttlecocks with doily imprint, set of three.
Each piece in this set was created using an imprint of a doily made by my great-grandmother.
My shuttlecock series was created using white clay with lace doily imprints to evoke the image of the Kansas City shuttlecocks on the lawn at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Each piece was glazed with a white glaze and reddish-copper glaze to accentuate the texture and details of the doily. The bottom/inside of each shuttlecock was glazed with a white glaze to allow for display when laid on its side.
I enjoy creating pottery using crocheted doilies, especially those made by my great-grandmother. I press a doily into a slab of clay and carefully cut around each shape before forming it. The doily is removed and can be washed or reused without harm. Each crocheted doily is unique and each piece of pottery I create is one-of-a-kind as well.
Size of each shuttlecock is 6x5 inches.
