Boat Dock at Sunrise

This is my interpretation of an image shown to me on the walls of a ancient temple I am often taken to in meditation. As this painting continued to reveal itself I couldn't help but be reminded of the many paintings and drawings I have seen of the Tibetan light body.

Ceramic bowl with crocheted doily imprint. The cobalt blue color evokes tranquility. Granny's Lace was created using a doily crocheted by Cora Brown. Granny Brown, as she was known, could look at a doily and recreate it. I enjoy making beautiful bowls with her creations. This bowl was made using white stoneware clay and was finished with glazes that accentuate the texture and details of the doily. The inside of this bowl is cobalt blue. The back is glossy black. It is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. The size is 9x9x1.5. KM1814. IMG_7742.

Eva's Lace was created using a doily crocheted by Eva Wiebelhaus, my sister-in-law’s mother. Eva was an elegant woman, and her doilies are elegant as well. I enjoy making beautiful bowls with her creations. This bowl was made using white stoneware clay and was finished with a glossy black glaze. The glaze was sanded off to expose the white clay and reveal the doily design. A glossy clear glaze was added. The back is glossy black. The bowl is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Ceramic bowl with crocheted doily imprint. The red color signifies strength, power and courage. I love to create beautiful works of art starting with a lump of clay. It took several years of playing with clay before I could call myself an artist. I now feel comfortable saying I am a ceramic artist. I have enjoyed giving my pottery to family and friends and displaying and selling my work at various galleries and shows in the Kansas City area. Cora's Lace was created using a crocheted doily made by Cora Brown, my niece’s grandmother. I press a doily into a slab of clay and carefully cut around each shape before forming it. The doily was removed and can be washed or reused without harm. This bowl was made using white stoneware clay and was finished with glazes that accentuate the texture and details of the doily. The inside of the bowl is firebrick red. The outside is glossy black. Each crocheted doily is unique and each piece of pottery I create is one-of-a-kind as well. The bowl is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. The size is 10x10x3 inches. KM1294. IMG_2466.

Walking at Powell Gardens on a research day, I snapped this picture. I like how the grasses are trying to lay down, as if telling me to rest.

This is a composit of eight ocean and sky images of photos I had taken in different places and merged them together to create a different look

Red on Blue abstract.

Here is an expression out of the Flint Hills Kansas. I enjoyed modulating the three levels of scale and perspective to fit the low horizon line. I made great effort to create a three dimensional expanse of clouds into a state of airiness, recession and believability; coupled with the low horizon of a barn and cows. I tried with great care to keep all the attention on the waiting cows in terms of the subordination of color and value. I wanted to lead the viewers eye into the composition by employing a secondary interest component of a well traveled path to the barn where warmth and food would met their needs. Often times farmers will have a very distinctive loud whistle recognized by the owners animals, or a bell would be rung that the food has been spread out in the barn. Come and get it!!!

I loved the scene of distance in this scene as well as the towering clouds that cast shadows along the hillside.

Sometimes the sky puts on an elegant show of light, shadow and drama.

Broad areas of texture and color are used to capture the atmospheric effects of early morning sunlight along the Mexican Riviera. Both color and luminosity play an active role as the fishing boats are gently tossed about on the sunlit ocean. The viewer is invited to relax and travel along the coast taking in the sky water and beach.

This painting was completed "all prima" style in a quiet, studio setting. The composition invites the viewer to explore the interplay of positive and negative shapes. The limited palette accentuates the quiet, serene mood and makes literacy the central focus.

This acrylic painting is one of my favorites for the moment reflecting a peaceful stillness of the mornings. The 2400.00 is for the framed original. Prints are available as well.

Inspired by a sunny day and designing patterns of colors Artistic Process: The background is 2 cut transparent glass circles fused together first, then the pinwheel "petals", center and patterned pebbles along the edges were tack fused in a separate firing for texture and dimension. The "petals" are made with pattern bars that are assembled into a pinwheel design, the patterned pebbles were made from cut up pieces of the pattern bars See Below for an explanation of a pattern bar. The center is made with ground glass. The glass stand is kilnformed into a shape to support the sculpture with coldworking to ensure the bottom is level and sturdy.

I have a friend from Kenya. He would often speak of sitting below the Acacia tree on a warm evening, enjoying the sound of distant music that a gentle breeze would bring his way. This is an acrylic painting on canvas mounted in a walnut float frame. Other papers, including sheet music, have been cut and collaged to the surface, then painted.

This was a sunset worth waiting for. Taken in the heart of the Flint Hills, with the grass as emerald green as it could be and the wispy clouds painting the blue skies.

I have been teaching art for almost two decades, including the likes of Kindergarten through 12th grade and even at the college level. My students can attest that I do not let them waste anything. I am constantly spraying down paint with water to keep it usable, picking objects off the floor and keeping articles that others might find useless. It is also common to see me digging in the trash because “I...can use this for something.” Through this, I have been collecting discarded materials that I feel could be used within my art. My artwork is built one layer at a time. Although my theme is aimed at portraying the various emotions the heart can experience; when I begin a piece, I do not have an image of what the end result might be. I incorporate what I am feeling into the materials I have found on my scavenger encounters. I had always despised the symbol of the heart. To me, it represented something that everyone knows how to draw, and a sappy feeling of love…uggghhhh!!! I thought, “Real artists don’t use hearts, or any symbols for that matter.” The year 2007, I went through an incredibly tumultuous time in my life. The result, I literally “felt” the spectrum of emotions my heart endured. This phenomenon led me to redefine what I thought the “heart” represented. My series “Junk of the Heart” represents all the junk, or emotions, that can be endured and what we choose “do” with them. The product is a metaphor for how the "junk" of our hearts can be transformed and reinvented into art.
