Second time I painted this Iris that grows in our flower beds

This oil on canvas measuring 36X36 can be hung with the white roses on the left or right. I have a very faint signature at the bottom on both ends. My desire is for the viewer to reflect on times when roses were purchased for a holiday, like Valentine, and enjoy the painting while thinking of loved ones.

On an early morning trip the sun showed up and wouldn't be ignored. stopping on the 4 lane HWY was not a problem as no one was out and about on this morning drive between Kansas City and Lawrence, KS. The fog settled overnight and begin lifting with the warmth of the sunrise.

Inspired by the rowdy bunch of zinnias growing in a container on my balcony, still rioting as Chicago winter approaches... The title is a translation of a phrase that appears in slightly different forms in two of the synoptic gospels, Matthew 6:28 (καταμάθετε τὰ κρίνα τοῦ ἀγροῦ πῶς αὐξάνουσιν) and Luke 12:27 (κατανοήσατε τὰ κρίνα πῶς αὐξάνει). It seems to me that both suggest careful study of how wildflowers grow (not just a glance at the pretty flowers), and that's the direction I have gone in this series of paintings, most of which are smaller (postcard size). In this piece (which is 14 x 20 inches), as in all the paintings in the series, I've allowed the paint to flow with minimal intervention, allowing the flowers to move (as wildflowers do) the way liquid moves on paper.

This charmeuse silk scarf shimmers in the light and drapes beautifully on the human form. Saturated in intense colors of blue, purple, pinks, yellows and greens were copied carefully from the Nikko Blue hydrangea in my front yard. The flowers turn this color as they dry on the bush in the autumn.

Reflected light and crisp shadows define this studio-based study in order to create a sense of warmth and immediacy. Painted in one session, the focus was to quickly capture the timeless beauty of everyday objects.

Damselflies are only about an inch long with a body about the size of a pin. This entire flower fits inside my thumbnail. I felt like someone was watching me and I raised my camera just in time to capture this once in a lifetime shot.

A macro photograph of a bee on my deck. I coaxed him into this pose by putting sugar water in the floor board of a Hot Wheels car. My patience was rewarded when he posed on the windshield of the car.

This group of secluded and majestic trees is at the end of a four mile hike in Sequoia National Park. I had the pleasure of visiting this wonderful spot on the planet a second time this summer, and in the company of two dear friends. As I sat sketching this scene, I was awestruck by the mass of the sequoia, and its resilience. Muir Grove, along with many other acres of this park, endured a severe fire in the summer of 2021. I enjoy looking for fallen leaves to use in my pottery as a way to preserve the beauty of each leaf in a lasting form. Fallen was created by pressing a sycamore leaf from my back yard into a slab of speckled buff clay. After cutting around the leaf and shaping it, the leaf was removed and discarded. After being bisque fired, a glossy black glaze was applied and then sanded off to accentuate and reveal the veins in the leaf. IMG_5948. KM1623.

The hummingbird, butterfly, hibiscus flowers, bee and ladybug are kiln-casted. A rare earth magnet was epoxied to the back of each. This attaches them to the brushed stainless steel and allows for the composition to be changed around. It also raises up each creating light and reflections. Alcohol inks were applied to the brushed stainless steel to create the background. The brushed stainless steel (painted with alcohol inks) is wired for hanging.

Wildlife art has been around for centuries and has played a key role in highlighting the beauty and diversity of natural world. It has had a powerful impact on how we view animal their habitats and the importance of the conservation. I use wildlife art as a tool to promote a message of respect and appreciation for the environment. Through my paintings I want to create a connection between nature ,humankind and environment and enable a conversation to conserve these creatures.

Whispers of clouds float across the Flint Hills of Kansas.

The entire piece utilized a hand held plasma torch and an angle grinder which allowed the subsequent heat to cause the two crows to stand out from the textured landscape behind. The branches are hand cut from steel and copper. One crow holds a red glass heart in offer to it’s mate.

This painting comes from the time I lived next door to a musician. On late summer nights the windows were open, all was quiet, the children were asleep and I would hear the mellow tones of the cello coming from his attic window as he picked up his instrument and brought it to life. This is a framed acrylic painting with added textures and collaged materials.
