Ceramic vase with sycamore leaf imprint and linen texture. Over the past few years, I have discovered a true passion in my life. I absolutely love to create beautiful works of art starting with a lump of clay. It took several years of playing with clay before I could call myself an artist. I now feel comfortable saying I am a ceramic artist. I have enjoyed giving pieces to family and friends and showing and selling my work at various galleries and shows in the Kansas City area. Tranquility was created using a speckled buff clay and finished with a dark green glazing technique that reveals and accentuates the details of the leaf. The inside of the vase is glossy green. The back of the vase has a different sycamore leaf imprint. Many of my pottery pieces are inspired by nature and leaves have continually been a favorite subject. I pick up leaves in my back yard or when hiking and press them into clay to preserve their beauty. I use each leaf only once. The vase is waterproof and food safe. The size is 5.5x6.5x2.5 inches. Serenity was created using a crocheted doily made by Eva Wiebelhaus, my sister-in-law’s mother. The bowl was made using white stoneware clay and was finished with a glaze that accentuates the texture and details of the doily. The inside of the bowl is glazed sapphire blue. The outside is glazed glossy black. I press a doily into a slab of clay and carefully cut around each shape before forming it. The doily is removed and can be washed or reused without harm. Each crocheted doily is unique and each piece of pottery I create is one-of-a-kind as well. The bowl is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. The size is 14x14x2 inches. IMG_2461.

These two loving penguins are the epitome of commitment! The penguins were created on the top layer of this two-layer piece using glass powders. The bottom layer is an enamel wash of blues, purples, and white and was fired separately before the two layers were full fused together. The glass piece measures 9" x 9" and is set into a 14" x 14" white frame.

Abyss

Early morning watercolor sketch of our tent, set high in the Rockies at Frisco CO. It had rained during the night and most everything was wet, with a foggy mist still heavy in the air. The aspens were aglow! There was a very vocal crow in our camp, so I painted him in as part of the story. Material is watercolor and ink on 140lb hot press watercolor paper.

I took this picture during an autumn snowstorm, thus the light colored streaks flying across the scene and the beautiful color of the remaining leaves. I decided to change the picture into a black & white except for the tree. I wanted the tree to stand out and help tell my story that we can almost always find something positive even in challenging and undesirable situations.

One evening as I was on my back deck I looked up to see the most contrails I had ever seen in my life. I guess that's why they call this "Fly Over Country." Since Kansas is my home, I seldom fly over it myself. I have incorporated photos printed on fabric with other patchwork, enhancing it with golden beads to represent fireflies, and barely seen black beads to represent the chiggers that also make their home in my yard in the summertime.

This take-off of a traditional quilt pattern contrasts the bright flowers of spring and summer with the equally bright crystals of winter snows covering them in a white blanket. My inspiration was the poem, "Levelers" by Myron Dunavan.

Zebras make a beautiful geometric image when they stand crossing shoulders. I took this image and simply applied imagination to determine colors and patterns.

I have been teaching art for almost two decades, including the likes of Kindergarten through 12th grade and even at the college level. My students can attest that I do not let them waste anything. I am constantly spraying down paint with water to keep it usable, picking objects off the floor and keeping articles that others might find useless. It is also common to see me digging in the trash because “I...can use this for something.” Through this, I have been collecting discarded materials that I feel could be used within my art. My artwork is built one layer at a time. Although my theme is aimed at portraying the various emotions the heart can experience; when I begin a piece, I do not have an image of what the end result might be. I incorporate what I am feeling into the materials I have found on my scavenger encounters. I had always despised the symbol of the heart. To me, it represented something that everyone knows how to draw, and a sappy feeling of love…uggghhhh!!! I thought, “Real artists don’t use hearts, or any symbols for that matter.” The year 2007, I went through an incredibly tumultuous time in my life. The result, I literally “felt” the spectrum of emotions my heart endured. This phenomenon led me to redefine what I thought the “heart” represented. My series “Junk of the Heart” represents all the junk, or emotions, that can be endured and what we choose “do” with them. The product is a metaphor for how the "junk" of our hearts can be transformed and reinvented into art.

This is an AWFUL photograph of this beautiful oil on canvas. The application is gritty, which brings the viewer into the painting, but creates a grainy photograph. I promise you, the actual painting is quite enticing. It is a 8X10, framed oil. I was hoping to convey loneliness and possibly conflict for the viewer.

I would like this landscape to entice the viewer to walk the path, past the tree, to discover where hidden beauty awaits the traveler. I hope BEGINNING OF MY JOURNEY talks to you.

Baddha Konãsana is a large scale abstract painting titled after the butterfly pose in hatha and modern yoga. Created with palette knives and non traditional tools, this large scale abstract expressionist work is influenced by Hennick’s meditation and yoga practice. A 48″ x 36″ large scale acrylic painting on gallery canvas installed in a white floating frame. This painting was completed in 2021.

A framed 12″ x 12″ acrylic painting on birch panel. Focused Dhyāna #3 is one of eight in a series of abstract paintings created with palette knives and non traditional tools. These abstract works are inspired by the different styles of meditation. The Dhyāna Series was created in 2021 and cut from the same birch panel board.

This abstracted painting was painted with a palette knife wet into wet. It/s full of juicy textures and vibrant colors, that swoop and dance across the canvas.

The forest is alive with the sweep of colors and shapes. Standing tall the aspens reach upward so that they have a bird's eye of the world below. This painting has been created almost entirely with a palette knife using acrylic paint, gels and modeling paste. A touch of collage adds greater dimension.
