On the afternoon of November 3, 2020 a wildfire broke out on the Konza Prairie's southern border, next to I-70. The tall, dry grass became an inferno traveling across the prairie. Volunteers worked through the afternoon into the evening to set backfires in an attempt to control the burn. This photo shows the last of the lines of the fire moving towards the setting sun.

The king of the tallgrasses, the mighty Big Bluestem, is seen in silhouette against the early morning sky. In the background, the waning autumn moon and the morning star are seen rising in the eastern sky just as the first fingers of dawn creep across the prairie.

Here, the normally muted autumn colors of the prairie pop during an afternoon's misty rain. Native American's call this misty, gentle rain a "female rain". The autumn prairie colors love the female rains.

A Flint Hills landmark scene off Hwy 99. I love the definitive contrasts between light and shadow. There is no question where the shadow lies and what time of day this is. The indigenous limestone rock wall are all over throughout the scenic byways. Love the bottom main structure stacking style and the way the walls are topped with a vertical placement. The color palette is a variety of greens, neutralizing grays, violets, yellows and oranges.

I wanted to emphasize the contrast of flat land and bigsky in the Flint Hills. The straight orange horizon line serves as a design device to create a point where the land ends and the sky begins.

Photo was taken on the Konza Prairie in June, 1994. I particularly loved the "Old Soul" look in this Bison's gaze. Fortunately, it was too hot that day for either of us to move very quickly and he allowed me to spend a long, wonderful moment with him. Photo is 16" x 12" and frame is 20" x 16".

"Haychair Respite" This idea is a result of my heat-exhausted body and state-of-mind, after a sweltering day of baling and mowing hay. The painting is a re-interpretation of a temporary sculpture installation I had originally created. By re-sculpting bales of Kansas straw, I created a life-size straw sculpture, reminiscent of the classically cushioned 'easy chair'. (Oil paint on canvas)

"Prairie Commemorative" is a nod to the natural resources preserved for the ecosystem and for agriculture. This piece addresses that challenging coexistence, including the layered stone post representing the bedrock foundation of the prairied landscape. (Carved from Flint Hills Limestone)

This is a plein air oil from a hilltop at Camp Wood, Chase Co. KS, from last March. I painted until it was too dark to see and didn't feel great about what I'd done until I saw it the next morning. Luckily, it worked!
