Lights at night combined with ICM produce this random and patterned image. Movement on the wet reflective ground emphasizes ecstatic and erratic lines. The lights become the center of attraction as if it is the main event in the ice show. The movement and repetition of line is not unlike the rhythmic and free style of jazz.

The Intricate Soul of Alebrijes is a piece dedicated to projecting the complexity and intricacy of an alebrije's soul. The artist hopes to help the viewer imagine its creation from beginning to end, just as an alebrije (traditional Mexican folk sculpture) changes and evolves rapidly through the carving and painting process. The soul of an alebrije is mystical and enigmatic, like the sparkles of light emanating from within the cello. By transforming the conventional physical structure of the cello, the artist bridges the contextual and non-contextual gap, creating an atmosphere of wonder and self-awareness of how the soul of an alebrije can be imagined.

This portrait of Billie Holiday contrasts the beauty of the young singer with the ugliness of the lynchings that took place at the time in the American South. Her song, "Strange Fruit" shed light on the horrors and angered the U.S. government, but she persevered in singing it, albeit at a high personal cost.

One of our beagles, Daisy, rests on my piano bench, looking as if she was ready to perform. When I sat down to play, she would often lie on the floor with her head raised listening to the music.

I have depicted summer and the busy time of a productive life with bright yellow flowers.

This is verse four which Cherwein begins with these lines which are both true and hard to take for those of us far past middle age, "As winter comes, as winter must." But her verse does not end there. The closing lines are, "...our souls take wing and trust the promises of spring," which bring us full circle. Winter may seem to us a dead season, but I have depicted the promise of spring with bright evergreen boughs and under the blanket of snow the first sign of melting..

This artwork combines art and music. Fluid acrylic using a swipe technique created a starry twilight scene. An outline of a Fender guitar was painted in overlapping colors using the same twilight colors.

The music of nature is exciting and always creative. At the break of dawn, the glow of the sun sweeps across the land and awakens the glorious sounds of the day. Nature's Keyboard showcases the piano as music fills the air. Painted almost entirely with a palette knife, acrylic paint and gels, the texture comes off the canvas and invites the viewer in.

“The beat of the sounding body: yellow and blue dancers" is acrylic on fabric taken from the back of an old cotton shirt and stretched on a wooden frame. The title is from a meditation on Leibniz, “Principes de la nature et de la grâce fondés en raison": music charms us though its beauty consists in nothing but numbers and the beat of the sounding body

“The beat of the sounding body 3" was done with watercolors and ink on 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper. As with the first variation, I placed the paper on the floor and cast 18 wood blocks the size of dice on the surface. I marked the location of each block and used those markings (numbered 1-18) to determine where to write selections from the 18 poems (or 18 stanzas). The writing was done with a Faber-Castell India Ink pen, with the orientation determined by the angle of each block. (Lines corresponding to the top left and top right sides of each block were traced to the edge of the page with a graphite pencil. On top of the writing, I used a purple marker to draw arcs connecting every stanza with every other stanza. I used watercolors to highlight the pattern that emerged at the intersection of those arcs drawing on the tradition(s) of madonna and child icons. In this variation, I included the Greek text of the description (in the Gospel of Luke) of what Maria/Miriam did: she put all the stuff that had happened to her in her head and dwelt on it.

She was an unwed mother, probably fifteen years old, probably scared to death (for good reason) about what people were going to think of her and do to her – and the writer says she put all the stuff that had happened to her in her head and dwelt on it. I think that taking it all in and dwelling on it has a lot in common with Joyce's here comes everybody approach to the world.

This portrait captures a sense of immediacy, time and place during a formal occasion. The carefree pose and flowing brushwork both accentuate the feel of the fabric and emphasize the elegance of the ball gown. The figure, glancing over her shoulder, invites the viewer to enter the painting and join in the ball room event.

This portrait depicts a seated dancer as the subject of interest. Through the use of a subdued palette and a centralized composition - the viewer is guided from head-to-toe through the painting - leading to the bright, white "Dancin' Shoes." The figure looks anxiously beyond the pictures edge, suggesting more activity taking place beyond the canvas. As a result, the painting suggests a mere pause in time - with more dance moves to follow.

Mallard created using multiple layers of glass powder and then fused to a patterned glass background. Total of 6 kiln firings to get to finished piece.

Strips of various colors of glass melted together and then fused to a two-layer tile of black iridescent glass.

This swallowtail was created with black enamel and two shades of purple powdered glass deep purple and rose purple. She also has white enamel accents added to her wings. The butterfly body is sculpted from an innovative clay-like glass product. The butterfly is displayed on standoffs in a white shadowbox frame. The standoffs allow the light to filter behind her in the frame. The frame is approximately 9" x 11" and the butterfly sculpture measures approximately 5" x 6". The frame has a kick-stand that will allow shelf or table display. It also has wire across the back to allow for wall hanging.

I have a friend from Kenya. He would often speak of sitting below the Acacia tree on a warm evening, enjoying the sound of distant music that a gentle breeze would bring his way. This is an acrylic painting on canvas mounted in a walnut float frame. Other papers, including sheet music, have been cut and collaged to the surface, then painted.

This painting comes from the time I lived next door to a musician. On late summer nights the windows were open, all was quiet, the children were asleep and I would hear the mellow tones of the cello coming from his attic window as he picked up his instrument and brought it to life. This is a framed acrylic painting with added textures and collaged materials.

How dull this world would be without the music that infiltrates our dreams and imagination, bringing memories and possibilities to life. This is a a framed acrylic painting on canvas with collaged materials and added textures.

kiln-formed glass inspired by KC Jazz

Glass Sculpture. The background is 2 cut transparent glass circles fused together first, then the pinwheel "petals", center and patterned pebbles along the edges were tack fused in a separate firing for texture and dimension. The "petals" are made with pattern bars that are assembled into a pinwheel design, the patterned pebbles were made from cut up pieces of the pattern bars See Below for an explanation of a pattern bar. The center is made with ground glass. The glass stand is kilnformed into a shape to support the sculpture with coldworking to ensure the bottom is level and sturdy.

Glass Art sculpture with Music Notes and a Grand Piano. The first step was to make a large mosaic of small pieces of dichroic glass carefully put together on a background of black glass and fire in the kiln to full fuse. The next step was to draw the design onto the glass with a waterproof marker then cut out on my ring saw. Once I finished sawing, I ground smooth all the edges and then it was fire polished in the kiln. All the pieces are epoxied to 3 tiered glass stand that was made by cutting three pieces for varying sizes and tack fusing them into the stand.

The Fire Bird project was made during a time in Gregory’s life where he began seeing the power in his imagination and awakening to his true calling as an artist. Taking inspiration from the song Fire Bird by MIYAVI, Gregory used the art theme from the album cover and used his own creative twist to convey a sense of awakening and raw, untamed energy that expressed the feeling that emerged as he began awakening to his more creative side. The project has sharp and and jagged shape language to express a sense of personal freedom and untamed imagination. In tandem, it has vibrant and contrasting colors to represent the strength and beauty of allowing one’s imagination to run wild.

The Gem Theatre has been a prominent fixture in Kansas City's historic Jazz District at 18th and Vine since 1912. The composition of the piece is meant to portray the feeling of standing in line outside the Gem, waiting for the doors to open. This highly detailed color pencil drawing has been rendered in Berol Prismacolor. It has been professionally placed in an off-white mat with a simple, black frame, and should complement most any decor. (Please note, the dimensions listed are the image size only. The framed piece measures roughly 6" wider and 6" taller.)

Kansas City fountains are the epitome of great gathering places. This fountain is a cascade of dichroic, fused and stained glass on a canvas with a marbly acrylic background.

How else will your small friends find a way into your garden or home if you don't have a fairy door to welcome them? Fairy doors have been thought to be magical portals to their world. Humans can't travel between these two worlds...for fairy use only!

The inspiration for this stained glass mosaic is the Japanese woodblock by the artist Hokusai from 1833. It looks great on a wall with direct light or in a window with the sun shining through.

The Best Rhythm and Blues is in New Orleans- combined with the Afrocentric beats and background. There is a Song called Basin Street and one of the lines is, " honey don't you know that this is Basin Street- the voodoo guardian of the Cemetary, Baron Samedi, complete with top hat and tails shows up to party! I can hear the beat- honey this is Rue Bassin or Basin Street.
