Bio:

My name is J.R. White. My wife and I live in a small town in Missouri. I have had the joy of being an early childhood teacher over a span of 35 years. I always marveled at the children’s lack of inhibition when it came to their expression in art. They disregarded conventions and created each work with vibrant color and expression often relaying feelings and experiences that were of importance to them at a particular time; true self-expression void of rules and standards. The use of personification in children’s books; giving an inanimate object or animal a human form was something I found intriguing. I was especially fascinated with two children’s books; “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss and “The Giving Tree” authored by Shel Silverstein. Both creations expressed to me how a tree could be seen as an object that could convey feeling and expression. Through this inspiration I began to record my personal experiences, really the experiences of many humans at some point in their life, in my art. Like the children, I am trying to break conventions, express my experiences and convictions, and relate my paintings to the joys and struggles we all face. As a child growing up in rural Missouri, my free time was spent hiding in secret forts in haylofts, playing in nearby creeks, building tree houses, and general exploration of my surrounding environment. I invite you to share in my past and present struggles, joys, and experiences. My hope is to stir in my viewers the realization that we each have a story and we are not alone in our daily battles with life.
